Getting back into school after a gap year or a long period of time can be difficult. It can be hard to get back into studying and doing assignments. However, with these tips, the transition of getting back into school won’t be as difficult as you think it may be.

First and foremost, start off with just a few classes. Students who get back into school after taking time off may overestimate how many classes they can handle. This, of course, will depend on your major and what classes you have to take. However, it is highly recommended that you start off part time, meaning 1 or 2, maybe 3, classes.

Going back to school with a full load can make for a difficult transition, especially if the classes are challenging. Start off with 1 or 2 classes just to test the waters and see if you can handle the course load. If you can handle it, then you can start taking more classes next semester.

Second, utilize the tutoring lab. Oftentimes, students have to relearn everything they previously learned in certain subjects, especially if the subject doesn’t come easy to them. It’s best to go to the tutoring lab and have a tutor help you with your classes until you finally get the hang of the lessons. Utilizing the tutoring lab will really help you adjust to your new courses.

Make a schedule, and be sure to include when you will do your homework and when you plan on studying. Going back to school can seem overwhelming and you may think you’re far behind, so it’s important to set a schedule. Set a schedule so that you have a designated time slot to review past material. However, make sure to set time to relax and have fun so you’re not overwhelmed with the information. When you set a schedule, you’re giving yourself a designated time slot to study, work hard, and adjust.

Surround yourself with people who want to help you transition back into school. When you surround yourself with people who help you study and accomplish your goals, you’re one step closer to getting on track. Motivated people that you may choose to surround yourself with may include your partner, friends, family, or even neighbors. Make sure you have a solid support system and that everyone around you wants nothing but the best for you. When you have a support system, you will be motivated to get back into study mode and finish school.

Connect with people from your school. Easing back into school and getting back into studying is always difficult. Try to form study groups with students in your classes so that you can all hold each other accountable and make sure you are all on the same page. Ask students around you for help or advice on your assignments. Having your peers help you study is a great way to back into study mode and it’s a great way to help you understand the material you’re learning.

Lastly, put down your phone so that there are no distractions and go to a place that will motivate you to do work. If you need to set a timer to help you stay away from your phone, then do it. Go to the library or the student lounge to get work done. You can even stay later at the office to do work. If you’re in a distracting area, you won’t get anything done. Isolate yourself from your friends and family for a few hours if you need to. You will absolutely need to put your phone down to prevent you from going on social media or checking emails. Use this time to force yourself to do work.

Whether you took a gap year or simply took a long break from school, getting back into study mode is never easy. Hopefully these tips will help you with this difficult transition.
