Learning how to stand up for ourselves is a skill that many of us learn when we are young. However, it seems to be a skill that gets harder and harder as we grow up. We don’t want to lose friends or be judged by others if we have a different opinion. Being our own person is what makes us unique; standing up for ourselves should never be viewed as a negative trait.

Confidence is key when it comes to standing up for ourselves. We must believe in ourselves. Confidence can come from both our words and our body language. Standing up straight with our head held high will show people that we are serious about what we’re talking about.

Be assertive, clear, and as kind as possible. You want to make sure you get your point across, but short and sweet is often the best way to go. However, this does not mean that you have to be aggressive. Finding ways to word your thoughts in a kind manner will get you far. It will help you stand up for yourself without picking a fight. This may even help you gain the respect of your peers. It’s also important to assess the situation. Not every situation should be handled in the same way, and you may not have the chance to immediately stand up for what you believe in. If this is the case, take the time to get your thoughts organized, and set a time to meet and talk with the person you don’t agree with.

Peer pressure is an extreme issue in today’s society. It’s important to surround ourselves with the people who positively influence our lives. If we do end up in a situation where we feel pressured by our friends, we should most definitely stand up for what we feel is right. If they are our real friends, they will respect our opinion.

Even if you are shy or in an uncomfortable situation, you shouldn’t just sit back and watch the situation play out. We are all given a voice, and it’s important that we use it to speak up for what we feel is right. The world may not always agree with us, but at least we can go to bed at night knowing that we did everything we could. Use your voice, no matter how big or small, to make the world a better place!
