Most of us can probably agree that job interviews can be stressful and frightening. Even after you have the first one, the second and third ones may not seem any less scary. Luckily, there are some helpful tips that you can keep in mind to improve your experience in job interviews and hopefully get hired!
Number 1: Do your research! Always research your employer and the job for which you are applying. The more you know about the job, the more confident you will be during the interview, which will not only make you come across as more professional but will also make it easier to answer any questions that you may be asked.
Number 2: Dress appropriately! What you wear says a lot about your attitude and respect for the job and employer, so it is important to wear something appropriate and professional. Focus on making sure your clothes are clean and pressed and fit well and less on accessories and jewelry.
Number 3: Be punctual! When it comes to job interviews, don’t just be on time; be early. Not only will you have less anxiety if you get there with time to spare, but you will also have a few minutes to mentally prepare yourself for the interview beforehand. You also want to appear composed and calm, not like you just ran to the interview and barely made it on time.
Number 4: Prepare early! If you prepare everything you need for the interview the night before, you will be less stressed the day of the interview itself, which will make you more calm and confident. If you prepare early you will also make sure that there are no last-minute disasters like you are missing something you need.
Number 5: Ask questions! Steve Fogarty states that “The questions you ask indicate your interest in the company or job." Elaborating on this, make sure that you do not forget to ask questions about the position and organization during your interview. Questions reveal that you are passionate and genuinely interested in the job and the community, qualities that are very important to those doing the hiring.
Remember to do these five things, but of course there is no 100% guarantee of success in job interviews! All you can do is put in your best and see what happens. You may have to get some rejections before you get a “yes", but don’t get discouraged and keep putting yourself out there. It’s the only way you will succeed. Good luck!
