How to Expand Your Knowledge Through Extracurricular Activities While in Quarantine
July 07, 2020
What kind of activities can you do to continue expanding your knowledge in quarantine? How can you keep your mind active while classes are out? Here a few ideas to inspire you.
In the last few months after transitioning to online classes, students have wondered how to continue expanding their knowledge and gaining experience while in quarantine. Many of them were taking advantage of the in-class learning opportunity because it allowed them to connect with other people with their same interests. It was the perfect chance for them to work on projects they would be able to use as their portfolio and to grow their experience for future reference. But all of that changed when classes moved to their online version and students were no longer seeing each other every day. However, do not let quarantine and social distancing discourage you. Here are a few ideas of things you could do these days:
Even though social distancing is still mandatory, there are a few precautions you can take in order to work on small group projects with your friends or classmates. The most important thing is to follow your state’s guidelines. Once you know what those are, you can connect with people who share your interests and start working on motivating projects. You can film a short movie, write a book of poems, take photographs, or any other activity that allows you to gain experience.
Expand Your Portfolio
If group projects are something you are still not comfortable working on, you can work on expanding your portfolio from home. Writers, filmmakers, and musicians need a portfolio to showcase when applying to a Masters, PhD, or a new job. Utilize this time to create new projects and strengthen your weaknesses. You can take your feelings and experiences into consideration when working on new things. Now is also a great time to reach out to your advisors or mentors for advice and feedback on your most recent work.
Check for any School Activities
Although colleges are closed and do not know when they will be reopening, many schools have set up other activities or volunteering programs for students. You can contact your advisors or research on your school’s website to see if they are offering any special programs. Volunteering can be a great option to spend your time and strengthen your resume. Always make sure you are participating in activities that do not spike or increase your anxiety or any negative feelings. Do not push yourself to do anything you do not feel comfortable with.
Check for Online Submissions
Depending on the kind of work you do, there are several magazines, blogs, and websites accepting submissions. There are plenty of online resources to provide you with lists of websites you can submit your work to. The best part is that most of them have deadlines months in advance which gives you enough time to come up with something. This is a great opportunity to expand your resume and showcase your work once again.
Even though we do not know when colleges will open again, you can continue to work towards gaining more experience and expanding your knowledge. There are several activities you can do on your own or with a group of friends while still following social distance guidelines. It is important to distract our minds from the news and current events and what a better way to do that than by working on projects you are passionate about? Use this time to strengthen your work and keep yourself inspired and motivated to better your craft.
