It can be a little nerve-wracking to see your gynecologist, whether for the first time or for your regular appointment. However, there are always questions to be asked. Your gynecologist is there to make sure you have all the information you need about “down there." If you aren’t sure what to ask, here are some suggestions!

10 Questions to Ask a Gynecologist:

1. Is it normal for my PMS to cause mood swings and depression?

If you’re constantly feeling all sorts of emotions without a good reason, this is a valid question to ask.

2. What’s normal when it comes to vaginal discharge and do all vaginas smell?

Asking about vagina discharge may be uncomfortable but if you’re not sure what’s normal or what’s abnormal, it’s better to know!

3. What are my birth control options?

Many people who start thinking about birth control or want to learn more often don’t realize that there are tons of different options for birth control. Ask your gynecologist and they’ll be happy to share.

4. How often should I be tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

Many people assume that once they get tested once, they will be good to go for the rest of their life. This is not the case.

5. Can I still get pregnant during period sex?

A lot of people assume you won’t get pregnant during period sex, so you might want to verify!

6. Can I get pimples on my vagina?

If you see little bumps on your vagina, do not freak out.

7. Why are my periods so heavy?

It’s completely normal to have heavy periods but you might want to make sure they are not being caused by something serious.

8. How do I know if I have a urinary tract infection?

You can research the symptoms but it’s better to know straight from the source.

9. How do I do a breast self-exam?

This is so important! Don’t assume that you don’t need to start self-examining until you’re old enough for routine mammograms. It takes five minutes and might save your life!

10. Why don’t I orgasm during sex?

Remember that nobody knows your body better than you. However, your gynecologist knows a lot about vaginas. They would be happy to explain anatomical reasons you might not getting there.

Asking these questions will get the ball rolling and can possibly break the ice if this is your first time visiting a gynecologist. It’s perfectly fine to ask as many questions as you want. Remember that it’s a safe place and every question is valid and welcomed. Your gynecologist is there to make sure you’re comfortable and that you both are on the same page.
