To wrap up 2013, we've created a list of 13 education startups that picked up traction this year. This is no means a definitive list, but rather ones that received a significant funding in 2013.

Socrative helps educators engage their classrooms with educational activities on laptops, smartphones and tablets. Teachers are able to track student performance and gather real-time data in google spreadsheets and Excel files to help personalize and improve learning. Securly is the first web filter that has been designed for schools. It protects students on computers but allows them safe access to tools such as Google, YouTube, and Wikipedia. It is cloud based with a free 30-day trial. The company claims it costs a fraction of the enterprise solutions that schools are forced to pay for today.

Schoolfy places educators at the center of their learning networks. It creates a private social network with both parents and students, where they can access grades, assignments, and paperwork. Educators can instantly create their own lessons online and tailor them to each individual student. It turns education into a personalized and customized experience! Learnmetrics™ have been compared to the educational version of Mint.com. They collect, connect and analyze school data. Treehouse brings affordable technology education to people everywhere, for both beginners and experts. Treehouse uses short videos, quizzes and badges to help subscribers learn web design, development and iOS development.
