Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, falls on Tuesday, February 5th, and is the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar. This holiday tradition is meant to offer you a new beginning. It brings in prosperity, happiness, good health and good fortune.

People all around the world prepare in one way: cleaning their home thoroughly. The week before is usually hectic because you’re deep cleaning the house, sweeping away dust, scraping the floors, throwing away old, useless things that would be considered “bad luck", and yes, even the leftovers in your fridge. To welcome in the new year, people go “New Year shopping" and buy new clothes, snacks, foods, drinks.

Typically, homes are decorated with lanterns, money trees with red envelopes as ornaments, zodiac animals banners and flowers.

My recent trip to Las Vegas in mid-January included festive displays of lanterns, chinese fireworks, and a gigantic pig to commemorate. This city went all out with their stunning showcase and you can tell they take pride in celebrating cultural diversity.

Festivals and parades will be held around the world, and will include traditional dancing lions, lanterns, fireworks, chinese costumes, prayers, and many chinese traditional performances.

If you want to experience the traditions for yourself, visit your local temple on Tuesday, February 5th.
