It’s 11 p.m. And it’s early. There are finals to study for and papers that are due. And a full day of classes await. Then tomorrow night, rinse and repeat.
The end of the semester may be near, but right now, that’s a distant, foggy shore. There’s so much work to get done.
And it’s 11 p.m. And you’re tired. And hungry.
It’s going to be a long trek through the night, and you need to fuel up. You reach into that enormous stock of fresh fruit you bought earlier in the day. Apples, Asian pears, bananas, cantaloupes, pineapples, mangos, tangerines…but nothing’s there.
Because you did not go shopping for fresh fruit.
There was no time, and even so, the cube of a refrigerator in your dorm room can barely contain the two cramped pizza boxes from the other night. And where are you going to put a cantaloupe?
You scavenge around the room. There’s stuff to eat, but nothing that would find its way onto an Olympic athlete’s diet plan. And preparing mind and body for finals week is like getting ready for the Olympics. Marathon sessions hitting the books, writing essays, reviewing notes, punctuated only by short breaks wondering why every one of your professors believes in cumulative exams.
There’s popcorn. A box of dry cereal. Some rice cakes. And the two day old pizza. Good—that should get you through the wee hours.
Actually, not good.
Snacks that are high in simple carbs or processed sugar can give you a temporary energy boost, but it wears off quickly, and when it does, like anything else that goes up too fast, comes crashing down at equal speed. Worse, you’re left feeling depleted the next day.
Let’s get back to that stock of fresh fruit.
Fruit is an instant energy supplier. And it provides the nutrients necessary to help keep the body healthy; it boosts the immune system, keeps you hydrated, and contributes to a healthy digestive system. It fills you up without adding any unnecessary fats. And there’s the instant energy boost.
Unfortunately that cube refrigerator is not going to cooperate. But that’s okay. Because you don’t need a refrigerator.
