My heart always leads me to praise others, look for the good in others, and help others believe in themselves. I have realized through teaching that this positive intention can lead to negatives. It can give others a false sense of confidence. It can lead others to seek approval and increase their dependence on others.
The healthy balance lies in honesty. Recognizing my heartfelt emotions and verbally expressing them isn’t enough for the love to be received. Rather, communicating in ways that equip my students, family members, friends, and co-workers with understanding is more important. Not only providing genuine praise when it is deserved, but also providing polite feedback when it is warranted. I welcome honest feedback as an indicator of a friend who cares about me.
We all will face multiple struggles throughout the course of our journey. It is our choice if we want to approach these struggles for self and others with honesty. Honesty breeds trust for those we wish to serve. Trust breeds an opportunity to deepen the depth of our relationships.
