Within the first few minutes of waking up, I have already checked Facebook and Instagram. Sound familiar? We spend so much time on social media – but have we absorbed information that really matters in the world today? Between school, work and trying to fit in a social life, it can be hard, especially for students, to keep up with current events. Sometimes people say there is too much news to sort through, but staying up to date wit the news doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming.

Here are some ways to keep up with current events and stay informed!

Choose your favorite news summary

If you are like most people, you don’t have the time to spend hours of the day watching the news. There is a solution! Most news outlets have an hourly summary they run throughout the day that includes everything you need to know that fits into a quick five to ten minute rundown. NPR, BBC, ABC and FOX news have these kind of summaries. This is a great way to catch up when you are on the go!

Select your favorite unbiased news outlet

Save time by heading straight to the one you know and trust! This will help you to be informed without any added opinions blurring the facts along the way. My favorite source for trustworthy, accurate and unbiased news is NPR!

Find your favorite biased news outlet

The news can be depressing sometimes and occasionally, I need a little pick me up afterwards. Opinion writing, while obviously extremely biased can help make the facts a little less depressing. Some of my personal favorites are The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

Curate your social media feeds

Follow to be in the know! News outlets usually have social media accounts that you can follow to get quick updates to stay in the know when you are scrolling through your feed. They share the news but also have some funny, feel-good posts as well. Some of the favorites are the TODAY show and BBC news.

Download a news app

Bored during your morning commute? Not anymore! Download an app that can help you get a rundown for you that pulls from tons of sources and condenses it in a way that simple and easy. One of my favorites is Circa where you can filter what topics interest you and The Skimm that provides the news, in addition to some humor.
