Bumble, S’well, Credit Karma, Glossier, The Body Shop, Build-a-Bear, Proactiv - these are but a handful of the many thriving businesses founded and run by women. Patronizing any female-led business is an act of sisterhood; it is particularly important to support smaller female-led businesses.

Haven Tattoo Parlor :

Founded by artist Jes Valentine, Brooklyn business Haven Tattoo Parlor was founded specifically for women. Many tattoo artists (primarily male) look down on the simpler, subtler designs women prefer these days; one tattoo artist outright told me to get out of his studio when I requested a white ink tattoo. Haven is built on the idea that no one should be judged for how they want to decorate their body. As if that weren’t enough, Haven has only female employees as part of Ms. Valentine’s mission to bolster women. The studio doesn’t have a website yet, so you can look at Ms. Valentine’s Instagram to satisfy yourself.

Santa Isla :

Jessica Sanchez’s jewelry company pays homage her Colombian heritage, particularly the indigenous Embera Chamii people who are known for their intricate beadwork. A few Chamii families, primarily women, create gorgeous pieces like bib necklaces that Ms. Sanchez then sells to others across the world. This business is a way for the Embera Chamii people to preserve a part of their dying tribal culture while making an honest living profit. Their website isn’t active at the moment, so we shall have to satisfy ourselves with the company’s beautiful Instagram.

Tradesy :

Tracy DiNuzo’s luxury resale website is essentially an online thrift shop without the shadiness of other such sites. What sets it apart is its goals: sustainability, transparency, and body positivity. Now you can clean out your closet and make a few bucks at the same time. They stock extended sizes, too.

Mondo Mondo :

Natasha Ghosn’s perfume and jewelry company specializes in classy throwback pieces like mood rings. Their scents are glamorous and unique. The best part is that they’re affordable, handmade, and cute. Their products are available online and in person across thirteen states in stores like Le Garconne NYC, Assembly LA, and Vestige Philadelphia, plus several stores in five different countries.

Rayo and Honey :

This Brooklyn-based brand delivers clean, minimalist designs on bags, banners, and pins. The company is based on positive affirmations that its founder, Roachelle Negron, grew up hearing. The brand was created primarily to bolster women of color. Items are printed with phrases like  “God is a Black Woman" and “You are Enough." Items are available for purchase both online and in store.

These are only five businesses founded and run by women; there are thousands more out there. The companies above were designed to uplift women; by patronizing them, you, too, are supporting a fellow woman.
