Over the past several years, I’ve become more conscious when it comes to my impact on our planet. I’m personally an avid lover of fashion, and have been since before I can remember. I’ve recently come across a new increasingly popular type of retailers and brands, which are known for their eco-friendly views
when it comes to fashion. Did you know that 80 billion pieces of clothing are made each year and
majority of them end up in landfills after not being wanted anymore? Eco-friendly or environmentally friendly fashion means that the companies manufacturing the textiles, jewelry, handbags and shoes are doing it in a way that won’t hurt the environment. These sustainable and ethical values are appearing more throughout the fashion industry, with even large fashion retailers, such as H&M and ASOS taking a stance when it comes to minimizing their environmental footprint.
We did a little research to find five eco-friendly online fashion retailers and comprised a list to help you shop more ethically:
H&M’s Conscious Line
Despite H&M being one of the most popular clothing brands in the world, known for their good deals and quality items, in 2017 they rolled out their conscious collection, where every piece from the collection is made from sustainable materials.
ASOS’ Eco Edit
While scrolling through ASOS’s endless pages of products, you may not realize that some of them are considered eco-friendly fashion and are a part of their “Eco Edit" brands. Eco Edit came out in 2010 in the
company's effort to promote manufacturers and brands who use sustainable business practices. There are currently 36 brands being sold through the Eco Edit and ASOS is working alongside these brands
to build communities, preserve artisanal skills, address climate change challenges, and removing waste, just to name a few.
Reformation
With their favorite phrase being, “Being naked is the #1 most sustainable option. Reformation is #2.", Reformation is a brand that was created in Los Angeles in 2009 who put sustainability at the core
of everything they do. Their factories use efficient, eco-friendly and prosocial equipment and they have invested in green building infrastructure.
People Tree
Founded and launched in the U.K. in 2001, People Tree is a company that produces unique clothing that is made with respect to people and the planet. As stated on their website, People Tree has transformed
ethical fashion into something contemporary, accessible, and desirable all whilst being ethical, Fair Trade, organic and sustainable.
Ethica
Ethica is an online fashion retailer, whose goal is to connect consumers and companies who all share a commitment to eco-friendly, ethical fashion. One their website, they share an impactful fact about
the fashion industry and its impact on the environment, “Second to oil in terms of total environmental impact, and to agriculture when it comes to being the largest polluter of clean water, the fashion
industry is one planet-harming juggernaut."
