The saying goes, “People do crazy things when their in love." But just how crazy are some of those things? Did it end up paying off, or did it end in disaster? Here are five young adults’ stories of the craziest things they’ve done all in the name of love within the last three years of their lives.
“I went to Germany for three days to visit my boyfriend. He was in a study abroad program for a month, but the thought of not being with him was too much. The catch of it all — I couldn’t miss more than a day of my January term class. I left on a Thursday afternoon, spent all of Friday and Saturday with my boyfriend, and left Sunday morning. It was a whirlwind of a weekend, but completely worth the memories we made, and eased the time apart." - Danielle, 23 (The two are now happily married)
“I started a relationship, knowing my soon-to-be boyfriend would be leaving for six months, and we’d have to spend the entire summer apart. We started dating right before he left for Austria, and I was hesitant to put a label on things before he left. He didn’t want to be with anybody else, and neither did I. We ended up making things official, and he left two days later. We FaceTimed each night he was gone, and only saw each other for one day once he arrived home. I had to leave for Virginia the next morning. We spent nearly ten months apart before we were reunited for senior year. Currently, we are once again in a long distance relationship, as of the day we graduated. Nearly a year has gone by, and we are still going strong." - Natalie, 23
“I forgave my boyfriend after he lied about his addiction. He relapsed almost a year into our relationship, and hid it from me for a good three months. After the truth came out, he promised to get clean. I forgave him, despite the lying, and sneaking around. We ended up working on our relationship for another few months, before I ultimately ended things. We just weren’t meant to be, and I knew he needed more help than he was admitting. The crazy part? He dropped out of school the next day, and I haven’t heard from him since." - Ana, 22
“Once, I considered transferring schools for my boyfriend, who’d just moved to California. I was going to a super small school in the South, and hadn’t made friends very easily. He was my highschool sweetheart. At the time, I was convinced we were going to last forever. I was crazy about him. So, after my freshman year, I moved to California for the summer to take classes at University of California and possibly transfer. We ended up breaking up after a month of living there, and I spent a good part of my summer alone. But because of our relationship, I ended up knowing my worth, and what I wanted out of a man. Plus, I lived in one of the coolest places by myself for three months!" - Jennifer, 24
“I was having a really hard time dating my girlfriend of a year, because she didn’t understand my faith. I grew up in a pretty religious family, and it was always pretty important that I found someone that connected with religion. At first, it wasn’t that big of a deal. However, the longer we were together, the more complicated it got. So, I contemplated switching my faith for her, and she did the same for me. I quickly realized I couldn’t do that. After another year together, she ended up becoming more accepting of my faith. We worked it out together, even though it was really hard. We are stronger as a couple now. The fact I thought about changing something about myself was really difficult though, for both of us. No one should have to change anything about themselves for another person." - Dave, 23
