So many of us look out at the world and see people doing huge, great things. They’re leaders. They’ve got their life together and are changing the world in ways we can’t even begin to attempt. It seems above us.
Guess what? It’s not. Although some people might be able to travel around the country and give speeches for a living, or have an important government position and influence our legislation, that doesn’t mean smaller things aren’t just as important.
Change starts at the community level. It starts with us, finding courage.
Start a Blog
One of the most effective ways today is by blogging. Every person, no matter who they are or what they do, has the opportunity to create their own URL and put their message in the world.
And, if it’s done well, people will listen. Blogs can be a place for unheard voices to be heard.
Join a Club
Yeah, it seems simple. But by “club", I mean find a group or organization that centers around some issue that’s relevant in today’s society. For me, that might be a Pro-Life group or something focused on millennials. Join what speaks to you, and get involved.
You’ll learn so much from this kind of experience, and reach out to people you never thought you’d be able to.
Read
This is the most important. The more you read, the more you learn. In order to be any kind of leader in your community, you need to be confident in your knowledge of whatever it is you’re leading.
Maybe that even just means reading books on how to be a leader. Books are never a bad idea, and will only stand to empower you in the future.
In Your Personal Life
We see leaders as bigger than life. However, we often forget that our own parents, siblings or friends could be people we consider leaders.
Maybe your brother is there to always watch out for you and continues to keep a brave face on, no matter the circumstances. Maybe your friend stood up to someone who was bullying her in school yesterday. All of those little things are what make people leaders.
Take notes from those people and watch what they do.
