Colleges have definitely made it easier for students to get involved in issues surrounding social justice. At my college, there are a ton of different clubs that you can join. However, joining a club is just one of the ways that you can promote social change on your campus. You don’t have to be an active club participant in order to Step Up for social change. Obviously, joining a club is one of the easiest ways to promote social change, but depending on your level of extracurricular involvement as well as schoolwork, you might not have a lot of time in your schedule to attend regular meetings.

However, many clubs hold different events throughout the year that aren’t limited to people who are members. You should definitely try to go, as many of these events will show your support. I went to the PRIDE club’s student and faculty mixer on campus, and although I identify myself as straight, I love showing my support for the LGBTQIA community. I believe strongly in equal rights for everyone and I got to show my support with the members of the PRIDE club, as well as other members of my college community. I also try and go to the Women’s Forum that is held every week on campus for members of the Feminist movement. Each week, the forum discusses different issues that I am very passionate about, and a forum is a great way to voice your opinion and interact with other people. I definitely suggest going to different club sponsored events if you can’t actually join a club, because you’ll be able to show support while meeting a ton of people that Step Up for the same things as you.

Social media is also a great way to promote social change on campus. There are a ton of accounts that are run by my school that I follow on social media. This helps keep me in the loop, spread awareness by sharing posts, and show my support. This is another super easy way to just say “hey, I believe what you believe. Let’s start a conversation about it." Social media is also a great way to meet other people on your campus. You shouldn’t hesitate to reach out to someone and get coffee and talk about ways that you want to impact the campus community. Everyone starts somewhere. You don’t have to lead an entire revolution on your college campus, as showing active support and interest surrounding social change will make a difference.

Starting conversations over coffee is how some revolutions begin, so although you might think you’re not doing enough, you are. Talking about creating social change is the first step in making change happen. Start small and see where it leads you. You never know what kind of opportunities are out there, even outside of your campus community.
