In every high school senior’s life, graduation seems like either freedom from prison, or a life or death scenario. Whether it’s taking a year off to work, going to a 4 year college, or just going part time to work and make money, the possibilities seem endless, but also terrifying. So here’s some advice from college graduates who’ve either been through the wringer, or are on the cusp of figuring out their own priorities.  Here’s what they had to say:

“Follow your heart, but always be realistic at the same time. Plan your future in a way that you are happy, but also secure. Make sure you are doing what you are sure you want to do, and are able to do”.

“The person who will truly understand you is the best version of yourself. The person you want to be should be your role model”.

“Never give up on achieving your dreams. Be who you want to be; it’s never too late to pick what you want”.

“Think outside the box and follow your heart”.

“Life is more than just academics. And when you find jobs, most people hire you through networking, personality, and your involvement in things; not just grades”.

“Don’t get lazy at the end of your senior year. Work hard till the end”.

“Dig into your own personal worlds to get an idea of the direction you want to take. Take a semester, or a year off before going to college. Learn what’s it like to be out of school and get a full time job or travel without parents guiding you”.

“Strive to do the best you can do, and not wait until the last minute to do assignments”.

“Don’t slack off, make sure to keep working, and don’t skip classes. College classes are run much different than high school ones”.

“Always stay true to yourself. Self love is love like no other”.

True pearls of wisdom from people who were once confused and agonizing about what they were going to do with their lives after high school. No more teacher’s hunting them down to do late assignments, no more substitute teachers covering for 5th period math class, and no more popularity contests or competing to become the next prom king or queen. After high school, things are bound to go in one direction or another, depending on the person, their goals, and how they decide to go about them. But just remember, there are people who’ve been in your shoes and know exactly what you’re going through. So don’t be afraid to hear it from students just like you.
