What to do when current events need so badly to be discussed? Should you write and talk about something else?

In the last few days, I have seen many posts on social media saying they have seen the people they follow or their followers talk less and less about important topics such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the need to arrest police officers who have murdered people of color. I have not seen this happen because every person I follow has remained loudly vocal since the very beginning. The people I know, they people I interact with, are still focusing on drawing attention to the issues that matter. However, is it wrong to write, post, and discuss other things?

Some people need to find times to distract themselves from the current news cycle. It is emotionally draining to be glued to the news 24 hours a day, and it is okay to find the time to unplug and distract yourself. This does not mean you are oblivious to what is happening around you. It does not mean you stop fighting for everything you believe is right. It does not mean you stop uplifting the voices of those who need to be heard. It just means you take time for yourself. It means you distract your mind by participating in other activities. It means you recharge and renew your energies to keep the revolution going.

What matters is that we find a balance in our posts, in our work, in our conversations, and in our lives. You can share information and resources on what is happening around the world. But you can also repost memes, write about your passions, and share a laugh with friends here and there. If you continue to do your work and advocate for the important movements, it is okay to take time in your day to relax and disconnect from reality. Just make sure you connect with it again and keep those around you informed as well.

For me, it has been hard to know when to write about different topics. In my daily job, I have to write about topics unrelated to current situations. I have to write about artists, influencers, and entrepreneurs. So, when I get home, I feel like I need to write about what is happening around the world and how it has affected people differently. I keep reminding myself that I need to find the balance between writing for work, writing to stay informed, and writing for my passions. It is hard to do, but not impossible. If you find yourself in a similar situation, remember it is okay to write for fun, for love, for passion, and to pass the time. We are human and we need to have ways in which we can unwind.

While finding this balance, remind yourself how important it is to stay informed and stay connected to the reality that surrounds you. Remember to share the news with your family, friends, and followers. Remember how necessary it is to spread accurate, relevant, and well-sourced information. Unplugging or disconnecting does not mean becoming ignorant to current events and situations happening in the world.

My recommendation to you would be to find the perfect time to write about certain things and understanding when and where to share specific pieces of writing. But do not be afraid to share with the world your words that are not related to any movements or any historical changes. You need to have moments in which you can share your soul and your passion. But there should also be moments in which you share any information you find, any resources you know are helpful, and keep talking about the things that matter. That balance will help you stay informed while still taking care of your mental health.
