Imagine a world where you can buy the perfect crossbody bag and also be able to provide 75 meals to children in need. I am happy to tell you that we are, in fact, living in this ideal world, thanks to the vision of Lauren Bush.

FEED is a social enterprise founded by Lauren Bush Lauren in 2007. The business design behind the company is very interesting. Each product features a number that signifies the amount of meals or micronutrient packets that will be given to a child if the item is purchased. In the past 10 years, FEED has provided 96,109,424 meals to schoolchildren across the world. FEED has partnered with the United Nations World Food Programme, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and the Feeding America organization to help fight against hunger.

When I heard about FEED for the first time, I felt a great sense of excitement. As a business administration major, it’s refreshing to see the typical business model being adapted in this innovative way, while still being very effective in it’s goal. Initially, companies weren’t expected to give back, but as time goes on, we have seen a positive shift as companies become more philanthropic. FEED puts the focus of their business on their mission to end hunger. "If you’re starting a social business, it has to be the core of your business, not just an extra marketing thing on the side. FEED has made a conscious choice to only work with companies that are in alignment with their mission, like Whole Foods, Target, Clarins, and West Elm," Bush explained.

In addition to one burlap bag, FEED began with Lauren's dream to make the world a better place for children. Lauren has encountered many challenges since FEED’s beginning, but the company has experienced a level success that she could not have predicted 10 years ago. For those who feel that same desire to give back, Lauren told Coveteur that “when you can connect your passion with giving back and trying to make the world a better place, that’s where the magic can happen."
