“That moment when you forget you’re volunteering to help change lives, because it’s changing yours." -Volunesia
As we get older, we have those moments when we stop and realize how blessed we truly are. Unfortunately, there are millions of places where people are not as blessed- places where there is poverty, economic crisis, and unhealthy situations. As women, we must stick together and lend a helping hand to the community around us. There are many organizations around you, so start your research and lend a helping hand. In New York City, there are three very interesting organizations that you can be part of, and they have a huge influence on women’s rights.
Planned Parenthood of New York City
This organization involves sexual and reproductive healthcare, and it provides clinical services as well. You have probably heard about this organization all over the city. It has helped millions of families, especially women. You can join this organization by attending monthly meetings, starting fundraisers to help build their funds for families, or by joining the training classes to help teach sex-ed and healthy nutrition classes.
Madre Organization
This organization more of an international organization. It starts in NYC, but then travels throughout the world. This organization helps countries such as Colombia, Sudan, Iraq, and Haiti by sending essential items to them. They send a variety of supplies including notebooks for school, supplies for hospitals, and necessities such as toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, and more. Volunteering involves helping to pack and ship the supplies to these countries, as well as helping collect items.
Women In Need
The final organization is the Women In Need organization. This organization has helped homeless women find homes while providing help with childcare. You can volunteer by assisting with arts and crafts and daycare activities, as well as helping these women train for job hunting and home finding.
As you can see, lending a helping hand is super easy and rewarding. We must share what we have and do our best to support one another in times of need. A helping hand can go a long way, and it starts with YOU!
