There will come a time when you and your childhood best friends will carry on with your lives in different locations. Just because you are miles away doesn’t mean that all of the special times have to stop. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you have to part ways with your best friends.

Make Time for Each Other

This seems simple, but college makes it so easy to get caught up in your own life. Never forget about your childhood friends because they are the ones who know you inside and out. They will be more than happy for you when you tell them you did well on an exam. They will laugh hard at your awkward moments that happened to you that day. Your lifelong best friends also know how to cheer you up on your rough days more than anyone else. Make sure you’re keeping them in the loop as much as possible.

Show Them How Important They Are

Friendships can fade out easily when one person feels that they have been forgotten. When you do something that reminds you of your friend, shoot them a quick text to let them know. Social media makes it so easy to communicate; we almost have no excuse.  If you’re in need of a catch up session, reach out to your friend and set up a time to FaceTime, Skype, or talk on the phone. Snail mail may not be as popular anymore, but who doesn’t love receiving a card in the mail? Send your friends a card, or even a care package, filled with goodies that make you think of them.

Make the Most of Your Time Together

Your time together may be short, but it’s important to make the most of it. You may be able to get together on holiday breaks, or you might have to plan special trips to see each other. Plan activities that you used to always love doing together to bring back old memories. You could also try a new restaurant, coffee shop, or store that has opened since that last time you’ve been in town together so you keep creating new memories.

The biggest take away about having long distance friendships is to never be afraid to reach out to them first. There’s a reason they’ve been in your life for so long, and I’m sure they would love to hear from you!
