As I was in class the other day, I heard “it’s only Tuesday and I’m burnt out." This seems to be the popular opinion among all of my classmates. While I’ve heard it referred to as a waste of time, ‘me time’ is essential to, well… living a life of content. Let me be honest here; while I was doing some research for this article, I found little to no material relating to college students/millennial ‘me time’. While it may not seem to be as important as motherhood, ‘me time’ it is still essential.

Let’s explore why:

First a little background: While the term ‘me time’ most likely causes you to picture images of someone sitting cross-legged, surrounded by candles and light music while chanting ‘ohm,’ that is not necessarily accurate. ‘Me time’ is whatever you want it to be- whatever makes you happy and focuses on… what else? You!

Why is it essential?

Well, among other things, it helps you feel centered, focused, and refreshed. It betters our relationships with others, both intimate and casual, and it allows for self growth.

As we work and do all we can for others, we often neglect the responsibilities we owe to ourselves. This is where ‘me time’ comes into play. When we spend time by ourselves, deep thinking and recharging our batteries, the world becomes easier to handle.

I can’t remember where this came from, but it’s one of my favorite quotes ever:

“All of this [is] essential so we can better interact with each other. Spending some time with yourself is good for your sanity, and you won’t feel so resentful towards others. Not to sound repetitive, narcissistic, or even self coach-y, [but] loving and respecting yourself will lead you to love and respect others the way they deserve."
