At a time when the Trump administration, a group that Melania Trump is included in as the First Lady, is under fire in the media for their alleged involvement in the detention of immigrant children, Melania, after returning from a visit to the detention centers in Texas, wore a Zara army green jacket that said “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?" in white paint on the back. The backlash she received for the message the coat sent was intense and it inspired opponents to revamp and redesign the coat to send a message back to Melania.

Artist Justin Teodoro shared his piece on Instagram . It details the Statue of Liberty wearing the green jacket, but instead it says “We Should All Care." What is most striking about this art piece is the small child holding hands with the Statue of Liberty. The child is wearing a pink top, which is similar to the widely seen picture of a child photographed at a detention center in Texas. Whether or not this connection was intentional remains unknown.

Political cartoonist, Daryl Cagle, created a cartoon of Melania wearing the same green jacket, except it says “Shame on Me and Donald" on the back. On his website, he writes the context of this cartoon, saying that Melania and Donald claim she wore the jacket to make a statement about fake news. Another cartoon artist , Bruce MacKinnon, actually included Donald Trump in his cartoon, with the back of Trump’s suit jacket saying in white paint, “Not Even A Little," in response to Melania’s jacket.

Melania’s outfit choice definitely received horrible backlash in the middle of “the worst moral scandal in recent memory," as described by Stephen Colbert on the Late Show.

Melania’s press secretary responded to the backlash by stating that there was “no hidden message" and that “it is just a jacket."

The redesigning of the jacket, as well as all the political cartoons that came in response to the initial photo, which was shared and re-shared on every social media platform, caused even more national debate on issues concerning immigration laws and the immoral detention centers.
