The world is hurting. All of the violence and hate that has been making headlines has made it difficult for me to see the good in the world. Music has always been a healing power for me. Below are some songs that I’ve listened to on repeat to help see the good in the world and make me feel like everything will be okay.

Somebody to You

"Somebody to you" by the BANNERS is intended to be a love song to a romantic interest, but I've used it as a pick me up song over the last few weeks and a love song to members of my community. The upbeat song and the lyrics about wanting support in the best and worst of times is something I feel we could all do and relate to.

Respect

"Respect" by Aretha Franklin has been an anthem of mine since my kindergarten teacher taught it to me. Part of the healing I've gone through over the past week has happened through conversations with people. In my latest post for Step Up I talked about how to have a conversation with someone who doesn't agree with you. This song reminds me to show respect to others and know that I deserve respect.

What Do I Know?

“What Do I Know?" by Ed Sheeran is a song about love and positivity that has helped my soul. He mentions multiple times in the song that while he is just one voice he still hopes to inspire change by his words. This song with its soft acoustics and kind lyrics has provided me with a drive to promote love and positivity.

Bridge Over Troubled Water

“Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Artists for Grenfell was produced and released to raise money for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire. Various British singing sensations sang to a hit of Simon and Garfunkle that focuses on supporting someone by putting yourself before them. The song fit the situation perfectly and provided hope for me that love can still exist after tragedy.

I am Moana (Song of the Ancestors)

Okay, just hear me out. I know this seems kind of out there. “I am Moana (Song of the Ancestors)" by Rachel House and Auli’I Cravalho is a song about Moana coming to the realization of who she is and being reawakened to her purpose. The music is beautiful and the lyrics inspire me. This song reinvigorates my desire to promote change in my community.

The Best Day

“The Best Day" by Taylor Swift brings me back to a simpler time of enjoying quiet moments with my family. When I listen to this song I feel calm and content. Taylor Swift helps bring me to my happy place. While all the anger in the world can make me feel alone and lost, I am reminded that there is joy and happiness in the little moments.

What songs do you listen to that helps you feel like everything will be okay?
