Netflix’s new television show “Umbrella Academy" has been getting a lot of hype all over social media. People everywhere are posting their praise for the show and it got me questioning if the show lives up to the hype. You may want to add something like an example of the hype. For example, grab a headline or quote from a relevant entertainment publication or paraphrase the specific praises you’ve seen on twitter, instagram, etc this will give us a better idea of what people like about it; are people calling it addictive? Do they love the acting? Is it a guilty pleasure? Etc.

The show does start off a little slow, because the first couple episodes are introducing the characters and their world (can you say more about this? Is the world-building particularly tedious because there are so many characters or could it have been done in a way that was more entertaining?), but once the story gets going it sucks you in and does not spit you out until you are finished. Each episode leaves you with more questions that demand your attention and need to watch the next episode.

The show opens with the line, “On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began." From that first line you are thrust into the epic mystery of where these main characters came from, solving their father's death and trying to save the world from the impending apocalypse.

One thing that I really enjoyed about this show was its blend of action and comedy (again, revise this to exclude the “I" statement. E.g. “One thing you’ll find in this show is…" etc..) Most of the show is really action packed and blending it with the comedic touches gives the viewer a chance to catch their breath. Example? Describe a scene that is action packed and then undercut by humor?)

I also appreciated that the creators chose to have a diverse cast play the main seven characters (revise to exclude “I" statement). The show follows the Seven, which are the main group of orphans that were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves and raises them to be X-Men-style super heroes. People of Asian-American, African American and Latinx heritage are equally represented in the show.

Some of the characters that  are standouts: Vanya, Cha-Cha and Hazel. (since you aren’t going to be talking about Cha-Cha and Hazel until the following paragraph, I wouldn’t mention them in this sentence). Vanya is and she is considered the outcast of the Seven because she's the only one who doesn't have special abilities. She  spends her entire childhood in the academy being ostracized and kept apart from the rest of the Seven, and you really get a sense of how this has impacted her and affected her anxiety and need for medication. Revise this to make the action present-tense. Also, you describe this character, but I don’t know why you consider her a “standout"

The other stand out characters  are Cha-Cha and Hazel. They are part of a group of people tasked with making sure time isn’t altered and are hunting for Number Five, who has the ability to travel through time, and make sure that he doesn't affect the apocalypse from happening (this sentence is a lot to process since we don’t have a lot of background information on the world and story of this show before this. You may want to go back and see if you can incorporate such background information elsewhere). Their character dynamic was very reminiscent of Abbott and Costello and the banter between them added to the comedic relief that is much needed in a show like this.

Overall despite its slow start, Umbrella Academy is worth all the hype and buzz it has been getting. The blend of action and humor is really fun to watch and I would describe it as if X-Men and Kick Ass had a baby. Watch this series on a free weekend, because it will hook you from start to finish and you won’t be able to help binge-watching it.
