I hunted down professionals in a variety of fields, from graphic design to executive leadership, to hear the best advice they have received in their careers. These tips and tricks for the workplace and everyday life vary from following the golden rule to maintaining professional decorum. Keep reading to learn the best career advice these seven professionals have  ever received.

Sarah J. Burnett, Special Agent with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF)

Oddly, the best career advice I’ve ever received is from some basic values my parents instilled in me as a child: “Do unto others as you would want them to do to you." I’ve always believed that it’s easier to get what you need from someone, whether that’s information or cooperation in applying handcuffs, if you’re respectful and professional. There is no need to curse or belittle someone for any reason. Always do the right thing even when no one is looking.

Other good advice I received as a rookie: Stay out of the rumor mill.  Do what’s asked of you and a little more.  Keep your work life out of your home and your home life out of your work.

Moryssa Raney, Lease Analyst at Brighton Resources, Inc.

“Some people have a job they love and some people have a job so they can do the things they love."

Rita Lyons, Senior Graphic Designer at Rita Lyons Designs

“Don’t be afraid to apply for a job that you don’t meet all of the posted qualifications for. Just take a deep breath and submit that resume."

Sara Simmons, Office Manager at Brighton Resources Inc.

“Work hard and never act like a task is beneath you."

Kimberly A. Swauger, Controller at Atlas Services Corp.

“Never stop learning or be afraid to take on challenges. … The more you know and the greater your initiative, the more valuable you will be."

Amanda Littrell, Lease Analyst at Brighton Resources Inc.

“Never stop doing your best just because someone doesn’t give you credit."

Abram Leo Watters III, Vice President of Operations- Atlas Services Corp.

“Work hard and always take your vacation days."
