For two years I have been writing articles and advocating for mental health. Mental health is an underrated issue, and an area that many people have no knowledge about. Mental illness is perceived as dark and is a prey for many jokes and stereotypes. Mental health is something that we don’t talk much about in society and that’s why people often have such a wrong notion of what it is.
Mental illness can range from anxiety, chronic stress, mild depression, to serious cases like acute depression, PTSD, and many more. However, it is crucial to note that almost everyone has to deal or has dealt with some sort of mental health issues, be it mild or chronic.
Very recently, there was an email screenshot that circulated in the media addressing the need to take a mental health day off.
We all stayed home, at some point to have a mental break and relax a bit, but never had the courage to tell other people about it. Truth is that, everyone needs that mental health day off, and there is nothing to be ashamed of.
Self care should always be on the top of the priority list. Successful people always invest in mental health because they know that it will affect other areas of their life.
If you have a lot going on in your life, whether it is work or study pressure, clear out your schedule for a day and just reset your life and do things that will benefit your mental health. Sunday is a perfect day for this, where you declutter your mind and restore your energy for the upcoming week. Start by cleaning your room, because clearing your room will help clear your mind. Get rid of things that you don’t use, and things that don’t make you happy. There is also digital decluttering where you just delete media/files/apps/junk on your phone/laptop and I can assure you that you will feel so much lighter. Write down your thoughts on a journal, release your stress on paper and rethink your goals, plan your upcoming week. and take control of your life. Take a techno break, or even better a social media detox afternoon where you can recharge yourself, and heal and do things that makes you happy like painting or hiking to connect with nature. Read an inspiring book, light a candle, pamper and treat yourself and just let go of all the negative vibes and breathe again. You really deserve that ‘me” time and having a lazy day like that, every week will build your mental strength and give you the boost to conquer whatever you want in your life.
Of course, you do not have to do all this, you can tailor it to your own likes and let us know your tips using the hashtag #StepUpMagazine. Sometimes, counseling helps and if you feel like you can’t handle things anymore, do not hesitate to seek help.
