The case of Roe v. Wade declared that women have the constitutional right to have access to safe abortion procedures. According to Planned Parenthood , illegal abortions made up one-sixth of childbirth related deaths in 1965. Now, abortion has become one of the safest medical procedures. While many Americans still support that decision, there are also many Americans who fight against that right every day.

President Trump’s decision to choose Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nominee has sparked an uproar over this case. Many believe that Kavanaugh could threaten the future of Roe v. Wade, possibly moving to overturn the court case’s original decision. Pro-choice advocates are rising up all over the United States to fight against Kavanaugh’s nomination in order to prevent him from trying to overturn the decision. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, the decision as to whether abortion should be legalized or not would be left up to individual states.

The decision to overturn abortion isn’t widely supported and most Americans say that the original decision should stand. Roe v. Wade decided that a woman’s right to have an abortion falls under the same category as the right to privacy, which is protected by the 14th Amendment. Abortion should be left as a personal and private decision for women to make on their own. Interfering with that decision could be considered, by many people, a violation of the 14th Amendment.

Roe v. Wade has been under fire since the original ruling on January 22, 1973. With Brett Kavanaugh’s recent nomination by President Trump, Roe v. Wade is definitely at more risk than it has been in the past. The fight for and against legalized abortion will continue, and the final decision will always be at risk. Both sides of the spectrum consist of a powerful army of fierce individuals advocating for their own beliefs, and both sides are not expected to budge any time soon.
