The face of television is changing. More and more television shows are not only featuring women characters, but they are being written by women as well: offering new takes on old tropes and fresh perspectives. From insightful comedy programs like Michaela Coel’s Chewing Gum, to gritty crime shows like Sally Wainwright’s Happy Valley, women are getting more chances to wow audiences from both in front of and behind the camera. Here are three exciting shows for you to check out that were created and written by women!

Killing Eve (created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge)

Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh)’s life as a spy is not adding up to what she had hoped it would be. She is a very smart MI5 security officer who is also very bored and desk-bound. Villanelle (Jodie Comer) is a talented assassin, mercurial in mood, who clings to the luxuries of her job. Eve and Villanelle go head to head in a fierce game of cat and mouse as Eve is tasked with hunting down the psychopathic assassin- and the two become inextricably connected. You can watch Killing Eve on Hulu.

Derry Girls (created by Lisa McGee)

Amidst the political conflict of the Troubles between British loyalists and Irish nationalists in Northern Ireland during the 1990s, this irreverent teen comedy follows the mischievous exploits of four foul-mouthed high school students (Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Nicola Coughlan, Louisa Harland, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) as they get in trouble in Catholic school, mercilessly rag on their new mousy British friend (Dylan Llewellyn), and move from one hilarious crisis to the next. You can watch Derry Girls on Netflix .

Russian Doll (created by Amy Poehler, Natasha Lyonne and Leslye Headland)

Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) is a cynical woman who is on a journey to be the guest of honor at her 36th birthday party in New York City. But she gets caught in a mysterious loop as she repeatedly attends the same party and dies at the end of the night each time -- only to awaken the next day unharmed as if nothing had happened. You can watch Russian Doll on Netflix .

Keep an eye out as the year progresses- there’s sure to be more great television written by women for you to enjoy. Since these kinds of shows don’t often get heavily promoted, it helps to keep an ear to the ground and learn when something new and exciting is coming your way!
