In recent years, the women’s movement has been talked about more and more around the world, with the creation of organizations such as the Women's March, He for She, #METOO, and most recently, Time’s Up.
On Monday, January 1st, the newest of women’s movements, Time’s Up, made its way into the New York Times as a full page ad, across multiple social media platforms and into the conversations of millions across the world. This movement was put into action and supported by 300 Hollywood women, including Eva Longoria, Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, Emma Stone, and Rashida Jones. The frontrunners of this movement are all powerful business women, such as the chairwoman of Universal Pictures, Michelle Obama’s chief of staff, and the co-chairwoman of the Nike Foundation.
Completely powered by women, Time’s Up is a call for action and it addresses the issues of gender inequality and injustice in the workplace. It is time for no more silence, no more waiting, and no more tolerance for discrimination, harassment, or abuse. This movement began just a few months after the #METOO movement, which was a movement that showed victims that they are not alone.
The organizers of Time’s Up wrote a letter to women in “every industry who are subjected to indignities and offensive behavior that they are expected to tolerate in order to make a living." This letter let these victims know that they are supported and that this movement stands by them.
This movement is taking action by creating a legal defense fund, which has already raised more than $13 million dollars in donations to help victims and survivors access justice and support for what they have endured. Another effort to raise awareness for this movement was carried out by urging the women who are attending the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7th to wear black and accessorize with a Time’s Up pin. This was put together by Reese Witherspoon and her stylist in order to show solidarity and support for all the victims of sexual assault, harassment, and inequality in the workplace.
