One of the first things we tend to say when we meet new people nowadays is "what's your Instagram name?" or "let's follow each other on Snapchat!" It's no surprise that this is such a common way of connecting with others, as we are all immersed in our cellphones and other technology.

Whether or not we want to admit it, social media is addictive. In fact, the concept behind social media tactics is designed to be that way.

We are constantly caring about who sent us a new message, who liked our picture, etc. Instead of valuing our own opinions about ourselves, many of us take the comments and thoughts of others to heart.

In my own experience, I have definitely been guilty of caring too much what others think, and the reality is that these online encounters can only tear us apart even more. Social media allows us to be attacked on another level.

Another reason why I decided to press pause on my social media “life" was because it simply was taking control of me and what I was doing. Instead of being productive and getting work done, I was focusing all my energy on posting the best possible picture or funny post.

Some people may completely disagree with me and that is okay. I realize that some people have a tough enough skin to not care what others think. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but it is my decision to block out external commentary on my life.

I know that in the future I will be back on social media, but I want to work on building myself and my career first. I feel that in doing so that I will be able to contribute content that will hopefully inspire others and make an impact in a positive way.

I feel as though instead of bringing each other down we should be educating people on how to act positively. In my opinion, it makes more sense to use the Internet to bring the world together instead of pulling it apart.
