Your Path from Bachelor’s Degree to Teaching Certification

Nothing compares to graduation day. Getting through college requires plenty of hard work and commitment, and now you have your bachelor’s degree. But perhaps your true dream has been to teach others in a particular subject. How can you transition from a bachelor’s degree to a teaching certification? It takes a few steps, but you can achieve your goal by following the steps laid out in this article.

“I'm Interested in Teacher Education!”

Graduate degrees for teachers fall into two categories: the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and the Master of Education (MEd). Many resources indicate that the MAT is the best master’s degree for teachers, while MEd programs are primarily for aspiring educational administrators, policymakers, and other current education professionals who aspire to work outside the classroom. In reality, it’s not quite that simple.

Both MAT and MEd programs tend to be concentration-based, and while there are more part-time and full-time Master of Arts in Teaching programs focused on advanced pedagogic theories and skills, there are also plenty of Master of Education programs with grade-level, subject-area, and student-population concentrations.

In some areas of the US, a teacher with a master’s degree at the top of the salary schedule can earn close to $40,000 more than a teacher with a bachelor’s degree. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that going to graduate school will lead to a substantially bigger paycheck. The only way to know how much you’ll earn after graduating with a master’s in teaching or master’s in education is to look at the salary schedule in your district. You should be able to see at a glance how your education and experience will translate into dollars. (source)

With a current bachelor’s degree in education

If you’ve already completed your bachelor’s degree in an education field, obtaining your teacher certification will vary somewhat depending on the state you reside in. Your post bachelor teaching certificate can be obtained by following the rules of your specific state. If you were to teach in Texas, for example, there is a four-part process. Whereas if you live in Nevada or Louisiana it would be three.

Bachelor’s degree in another field of study

Perhaps you want to teach in California, and have your bachelor’s degree in a field that isn’t specifically education. But you want to teach. Like many states, California has an alternative certification program.

How long does the process take to earn a teaching certificate?

It will vary somewhat from person to person, depending on how quickly you’re able to meet the requirements.

For a person in Washington state, for example, the process is two-fold to becoming a teacher. You must complete an endorsement, which is what you want to teach, in addition to a state-approved preparation program for teachers. You can find these programs at Washington State University, as well as other colleges. The number of credit hours for an endorsement is about the same as any other major would be.

However, if your desire is to teach in an area where you don’t have formal education, it could take up to two years to finish the endorsement program along with the teacher preparation program.
