On Tuesday, May 9th, the Governor Brian Kemp signed an abortion law. This law states that the option for an abortion is banned once a fetal heartbeat is detected. A heartbeat can be detected up to 6 weeks pregnant, which is often before woman even know they are pregnant. Alabama took this law a step further bill by stripping away exceptions for rape and incest from a near-total ban on abortion in the state. The news of this new bill hit the the internet like a storm, causing thousands upon thousands of women to speak up. One of these woman, was actress Alyssa Milano.

In a tweet on May 10th, Milano said, “Our reproductive rights are being erased.
Until women have legal control over our own bodies, we just cannot risk pregnancy.
JOIN ME by not having sex until we get bodily autonomy back.
I’m calling for a #SexStrike. Pass it on"
Anyone who follows the actress probably knows how she basically started the #metoo movement and has always been a large advocate for females. In an interview with Associated Press, she stated that this strike was to remind, "people that we have control over our own bodies and how we use them."
Since her initial tweet, she has sent out many more further explaining her #SexStrike and providing instances in history where women used a sex strike (and how it worked). While it is easy to understand where Milano is coming from and what her strike means, there seems to be many mixed views. Of course you can never make everyone happy, but Milano stands by her words. Her most recent tweet about this situation came from just 8 hours ago on 5/14/19 stating, “I’m donating $10,000.00 to the grassroots orgs on the ground fighting against hurtful policies in Georgia and I challenge all corporations who work in Georgia to match my donation.
LET’S DO THIS. #LetGeorgiaChoose"
Despite everything being said about Alyssa Milano right now, it is hard to not respect her for standing by her views, speaking out, and calling to action so quickly after news of the bill. She is using her platform to speak about important matters and always has been known to. It’s hard to see yet if this #SexStrike is going to catch on, but fingers crossed these cruel and inhumane bills get changed. Whether you agree with Milano or not, every woman deserves the right to their person autonomy.
