I have lived by myself for a little over a year now, and I have loved it every step of the way! I decided to live on my own at a time when a lot of changes were taking place in my life, as I felt it was an important time for me to grow on my own. I had just quit a sport that had consumed my life 24/7, and I was ready to be happy again. Living on my own was just what I needed, but it can be intimidating at first.
Living by yourself gives you the ultimate freedom to do whatever you want. You get to choose who you hang out with, when you hang out, and even where you hang out. You can choose to have friends over at night, or just relax and unwind by yourself. You’re also in charge of what you eat, when you workout, and when you do your homework. Basically, you’re totally in charge of your free time and how you spend it, and this can help prepare you for the real world.
By living alone, I became a lot more confident in myself. I realized that I didn’t have to be hanging out with someone all the time to feel complete. I actually learned that I really love spending time alone. Social media can make it seem like we always need to be doing things with friends, but that isn’t always the case. Living alone has also made me more confident when I am alone in public. If you’re confident in yourself, you are happier, and other people can see this.
I feel as though I have grown up a lot in my short year of living alone. Of course, I still text my mom, asking her how to do things; I’m only 20 after all! Living on your own will force you to do chores that may not be the most fun, but will be necessary later on. These tasks can be as simple (but disgusting) as killing a bug, or you may find yourself assembling a piece of furniture with a portable screwdriver. No matter what the task is, you will find yourself feeling proud after it’s done!
Sometimes it seems that our generation is scared of being alone. Hanging out with other people is very important, but time for yourself matters just as much. If you’re thinking about living by yourself, I can’t recommend it enough!
