I’m guilty of this too so I have to leave that disclaimer first but how many of you have said something along the lines of “oh my goodness I would kill to be Selena Gomez/Gigi Hadid/that Instagram model."? I’d wager many of you have wished to be someone else based off of their Instagram posts and snapchats or the media stories surrounding their lives and if you personally haven’t I’d bet some of your friends have.
I spent my freshman year at a university I hated surrounded by people who I mostly did not get along with. I knew I wanted to transfer. Despite this, when I told friends from home that I was applying to change schools, so many people were shocked saying things like “Really? But it looks like you’re having so much fun!" This made me realize how skewed social media can make a person’s life seem.
All these Instagram models and celebrities are well versed in how to make their lives seem beautiful—it’s part of their job. You’re supposed to want to be them. They have photographers, lighting designers, brand deals, not to mention tons of money, and more that make their lives look glamorous. Even the girl from your school who you envy so much simply has friends who know her angles.
Just because someone posts a 10/10 picture of their new swimsuit on vacation in Hawaii doesn’t mean they don’t have their own troubles going on too. From family issues, to friend fights, relationship strife, stress, anxiety, mental health issues, and more, there are a plethora of issues that plague each and every one of us. Recently, it came out that Selena Gomez has Lupus, a disease that attacks your immune system. Gigi Hadid gets thousands of hate messages a day on social media. These are issue I know that I would not like to deal with and probably couldn’t deal with.
Your life is the best life for you. Whatever you do is best for you. Don’t let Selena’s millions of followers or that trendy Insta-bloggers constantly travelling lifestyle get you down. They have their own problems to work through just the same as we all do. We are human, and we have to love what we’ve got.
